Lana Del Rey – Ultraviolence

Lana-Del-Rey

Let me just start by saying feminists should have a field day with this album; especially after Lana’s infamous quotes about the feminist movement. This album is either gonna be good or you’re gonna hate it. Across the board it’s gotten almost all positive reviews. To feminists this may be signs of a consciousness of misogyny and a culture of patriarchy. Why do I say this? because the lyrics are about druggie dependent abused neglected gold digging women among other things. Tracks like “Fucked My Way Up To The Top” may sound cool and intrigue us but of course there are some who will be like wtf!? I think this was her intent and the album is supposed to focus on the dark side of women. I don’t think it glamorizes it but I can see certain people asserting that she’s promoting that behavior simply by singing about it. Apparently, her last album glorified this type of behavior so now it seems like a running theme with her. And she seems to have a habit of having men choke her. I think it’s pretty obvious she has issues but I don’t think her lyrics are intended to promote misogyny and bad views of females just the concepts she seems to be interested in because of how her mind works happens to be tragic. And this particular album really delved into her dark side hence the title “Ultraviolence”. I myself have a particular interest in dark, moody, emo lyrics and production. As for the feminist movement she says it doesn’t interest her and she’d rather not discuss it with people (I think this is because the movement has major PR issues and varying opinions). My favorite tracks are “Brooklyn Baby”, “Florida Kilos”, “Money Power Glory”, “Fucked My Way Up To The Top” “Is This Happiness”, and “Ultraviolence”. I give it a 7.5/10. t
